Basic information and documents for doctoral studies
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES
Doctoral studies follow an individual study plan under the guidance of a supervisor. For each field of study, there is a departmental commission which monitors and evaluates the doctoral studies.
A doctoral student's individual study plan consists of a study part, culminating in a dissertation examination, a scientific part and the defence of the dissertation. Part of the full-time doctoral studies is the performance of teaching activities.
A full-time doctoral student is obliged to be at his/her place of work according to the requirements and instructions of his/her supervisor and the head of the department. The minimum basic time of stay shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a total time not to exceed 37.5 hours per week.

Subject exams
The doctoral student's study plan includes a list of courses to be taken by the doctoral student and a list of subjects for the dissertation examination. The doctoral candidate may also take examinations in the course of the study part of the doctoral studies before taking the dissertation examination.
In such a case, the examination shall be held before a committee with the participation of the subject supervisor, the supervisor and two other members of the relevant subject committee. If the supervisor is also the subject supervisor, he or she shall assume the role of examiner.
The date of the examination and the examination board for the PhD examination shall be recorded in the UIS.
At least three working days before the examination is to be held, the following must be submitted to the Dean's Office of the Faculty proposal of the Examination Commission signed by the chairman of the departmental commission. It will not be possible to register the date retrospectively!
Once the date and the committee have been registered in the UIS, the examination report form will be sent by email. Once the examination has been taken, the original signed protocol will be handed in to the Dean's Office of the Faculty.
DISSERTATION EXAMINATION
A doctoral student in the full-time form of doctoral studies applies for the dissertation examination no later than 18 months after the beginning of the study, a doctoral student in the part-time form no later than three years after the beginning of the study.
The written thesis for the dissertation examination consists of a thesis (project) containing an outline of the theoretical foundations of its future solution, the current state of knowledge on the topic and an analysis of the methodological approach to solving the problem.
Applying for the state dissertation examination:
- obtaining a minimum of 70 credits, passing all examinations, including the language examination
- written thesis for the dissertation examination in printed form 2x (comb binding)
- application for the dissertation examination application for the dissertation examination signed by the supervisor with the proposal of the opponent

DISSERTATION DEFENCE
Conditions for allowing the defence:
- at least 150 credits, excluding credits awarded for acceptance of the dissertation for defence
- PhD student admitted before the 2017/2018 academic year: evidence of submission of a scientific publication to the peer review process in a journal of the Web of Science database with an impact factor / acceptance of an industrial property right application
- PhD student admitted from the academic year 2017/2018: proof of successful completion of the review process of a publication registered in the Web of Science or Scopus databases / acceptance of an industrial property right application / performance or realisation of a major work of art or artistic performance or presentation of the same in renowned foreign or internationally recognised domestic institutions and events
Applying for the defence of a doctoral thesis:
- Application for permission to defend the dissertation signed by the supervisor with a proposal of opponents
- hardcover dissertation - 4x, written in accordance with the Organizational Directive of TU in Zvolen No. 1/2011 (the dissertation includes an assignment printed from UIS and signed by the supervisor)
- autoreferat min. 15 pieces in accordance with the study regulations
- thesis in .pdf format, uploaded to the UIS, so that originality checking can take place
