Prof. Ing. Ján Sedliačik, PhD. was born on 10 January 1968 in Nová Baňa. He graduated at the Faculty of Wood Sciences and Technology, at the former University of Forestry and Wood Technology in Zvolen in 1991. In 1995, he started as a research worker at the Department of Chemical Wood Technology and since 1998 he worked as the assistant at the Department of Furniture and Wood Products at the Faculty of Wood Sciences and Technology of the Technical University in Zvolen. During the years 1999-2000, he completed the postgraduate course of higher education pedagogy at the Faculty of Education at the University of Matej Bel in Banská Bystrica. Academic title PhD, he acquired in 2000 after the defence of doctoral thesis in scientific branch „Technology of Wood Processing“. In 2004, he habilitated at the Faculty of Wood Sciences and Technology at the Technical University in Zvolen, and in 2013, he was titled as professor by the President of the Slovak republic. In 2015, he became the head of the Department of Furniture and Wood Products, where he works as a professor and guarantees the study programme Management of Woodworking and Furniture Production. During 2009-2017, he was a vice-dean for scientific and research activities.
His scientific, research and teaching activities are aimed on areas of wood gluing technology and hygienic properties of glued products. He is the author of the University book „Processes of gluing of wood, plastics and metals“, several text books and exercise guides. He is the author and co-author of fifteen original scientific papers published in journals of Current Content database by Web of Science and also fourteen patents and utility models. He is actively engaging in research within the Ministry of Education programmes of agencies VEGA and APVV.
Currently, he is responsible for the APVV project: „Lowering of formaldehyde emissions from wood based materials by environmentally progressive modification of polycondensation adhesives by leather-based biopolymers, natural nanoparticles, additives and activators. “ He was responsible for Slovak part of the international project of seventh Frame programme of European Commission „ECONANOSORB“, which was successfully finished in 2016. He completed several foreign study stays, e.g. at Washington State University in Pullman, USA; SGGW in Warszawa, Poland; Voronezh State Forest Technical University in Voronezh, Russia; and University of Life Sciences in Poznaň, Poland.
Prof. Ing. Ján Sedliačik, PhD is a member of several scientific and professional committees and also editorial boards of scientific journals. Moreover, he is the member of the American Leather Chemists Association, where he is a regular participant of annual meetings. He is a member of branch commission „Processes of Furniture Creation “for dissertation works at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at Mendel University in Brno. Furthermore, he is an expert of the Slovak National Accreditation Service and the member of the State Technical Standard Commission „Wood Products, paints, varnishes and adhesives“ at the Slovak Office of Standards, Metrology and Testing.
